5 Bollywood Movies Of 2016 That Could Give La La Land A Run For Its Money

Move over La La Land, here’s Bollywood’s best from year gone by

The entire West is gushing over the Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone-starring musical La La Land that also broke the record for the most Golden Globe wins on Monday. In response to this though, India has already picked the award-winning Tamil drama Visarnai as its 2017 Oscar entry while some recent Bollywood movies are not too far behind either.

Udta Punjab

Directed by Abhishek Chaubey, the film not only deals with the insurgence of substance abuse among the youth in the Indian state of Punjab, it does so with a sense of lucidity. Powerful performances from Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Diljit Dosanjh, and Amit Trivedi’s eclectic music score raise the stakes even further.

Dangal

The Aamir Khan-starrer has become the highest-grossing Bollywood movie ever and if you haven’t watched the movie yet, here’s why you should reconsider. The film blends the issue of gender stereotyping with the real life success story of Haryana’s Phogat wrestling family. Also, it’s nothing even remotely close to Salman Khan’s Sultan.

Pink

Battling gender pigeonholing is another bold 2016 Bollywood drama that stars Amitabh Bachchan. The movie has the superstar coming out of his legal retirement to defend a group of young women, who have been sexually abused. It asserts with no qualms that when a woman says ‘no,’ she means ‘no’; end of story.

Kapoor & Sons

On the face of it, this comedy-drama appears to be a typical Dharma Production but graduates into something much more eventually. Fawad Khan’s all-round show and Shakun Batra’s meticulous direction remain the key takeaways from what could have been just another Bollywood family film.

Neerja

The film narrates the story of the Pan Am Flight 73 hijacking in the year 1986 from the point of view of the flight’s head purser Neerja Bhanot, who sacrificed her life in order to rescue the passengers on board. The fact that even Sonam Kapoor’s acting earned plaudits largely sums up the success of the movie.
