Thank God You Missed It: Hey Bro + Dirty Politics

Disasters of last Friday

Hey Bro

What is the genre of this film? Comedy? Action? Drama? You never know, not even after the end credits roll. Directed by Ajay Chandhok and produced by Vidhi Acharya, Hey Bro stars Ganesh Acharya, Maninder Singh, Nupur Sharma and Hanif Hilal. Yes, a bunch of people you have never heard of. And the same old separated-at-birth story has been filled with boring non-twists to complete this film.

Mihir Fadnavis of Hindustan Times describes the movie as “Someone decided to remake the Arnold Schwarzenegger-Danny DeVito movie, Twins, turn it into a Bollywood masala product, and cast choreographer Ganesh Acharya in the role of DeVito.”

If that does not spell disaster for you, what does?

Mohar Basu of Times of India says, “A twisted version of Bollywood’s successful twin formula, the prime problem with this film is that despite drawing from a curious idea, it eventually remains tangled in the expected clap-traps and predictable laughs. Fitting in far too many fat jokes, the comic chops of Acharya can appease only those who can fall for broad humour.” He further adds, “The film is strictly mediocre and submits you to the staple drama-action formula. The actors make no attempt to bail you out of this tragedy. Though Acharya, Hilal and Singh at least try, Nupur Sharma’s inexperience shows visibly in her performance.”

Dirty Politics

Even Mallika Sherawat’s Bollywood comeback couldn’t help this movie stay afloat. A movie that stars actors such as Anupam Kher, Om Puri, Naseeruddin Shah and Ashutosh Rana could also be a box office disaster seemed unbelievable before this film came along. Shaky politics and even shakier camera work made this movie a big miss. All you will be doing at the end of this film (if you last till the end, that is. We were contemplating shooting ourselves) is wonder what Shah, Puri and Kher are smoking these days. And you will never be able to unwatch Puri and She raw at canoodling. Burn my eyes, please.

“Dirty Politics represents the same online trolls it resembles — a potential threat given its ability to misguide the masses with its half-baked ideas and smug ignorance. On the entertainment front, watching the repeat telecast of even the most lacklustre matches of the ongoing Cricket World Cup would be more fun and engrossing than this travesty of a film” warns Nishi Tiwari of Rediff.com

Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV says, “We know what it does to many of our smug and glib leaders. But politics also seems to bring the very worst out of some Bollywood film-makers. Here is another maddeningly muddled Mumbai movie that sets out to lay bare the filth and sleaze that Indian politics is usually associated with in the popular imagination but only manages to whip up bushels of cinematic muck. Dirty Politics is, from end to end, a messy affair that reeks of all-round mediocrity despite the presence in the cast of actors of the calibre of Om Puri and Naseeruddin Shah.”

Our verdict:

Hey Bro – One on five for Hilal’s attempts.

Dirty Politics – Give us our eyesight back. Or the name of Shah’s peddler.
