A new 2G-friendly mobile app from Facebook targets smaller cities in India that don’t have stable mobile internet access.

Facebook has added 13 million users in the last six months, bringing its user base to 125 million in India – its second biggest market globally. To cash in on this growing boom, our favourite social networking site has launched a 2G-friendly mobile app called Facebook Lite to cater to users with slow internet connectivity. The app is “built ground up for markets like India” because internet speeds are sluggish in most parts of the country.

“In India, over 80 per cent of the users are on 2G network. We have worked on improving the apps performance even on spotty connections and across devices from entry-level devices to high-end ones,” Vijay Shankar, Head of Products (Facebook Lite), told PTI. He added that, it will be rolled out in other markets in the coming weeks. The app is less than 500 KB in size with all the standard features intact including news feed, messaging, photos, links and notifications. Users can even select the quality of images they see on their feed to optimise data consumption. So what will they miss out on?  Videos will not play on the app. Bye bye grumpy cat vines.

Both Facebook Lite and the standard Facebook app will seamlessly work on any device simultaneously.
