Say hello to the smallest GoPro
Say hello to the smallest GoPro

The Hero4 Session puts size above all else

GoPro action cameras are ubiquitous, almost annoyingly so – show up at any major tourist spot abroad and you won’t be able to throw a stone without hitting one. This isn’t to say that they don’t have their uses – just have a look at Felix Baumgartner’s record-breaking space jump, filmed entirely with the little buggers.

GoPros have been shrinking in size with every generation, and you would think that anything smaller would be difficult to operate, but the company obviously disagrees – the Hero4 Session is the size of an ice cube. The Session puts size and simplicity first (the other models can be rather too fiddly to operate) – there are only two buttons on the unit, and you operate the camera with basically just one of these: press to start recording, press again to stop, hold it down for stills. There is no screen on it, although once you hook it up via WiFi to the GoPro smartphone app, you’ll be able to see what it’s recording; the app is also the only way to make any changes to settings.

The Session is waterproof to 10 meters out of the box, so you don’t need to buy a protective casing separately, and its battery life (long a point of frustration with regular GoPros) is reportedly much-improved. Footage is recorded on a microSD card, as usual, and the USB ports are pressure-sealed. The Session shoots full HD video (but not 4K) and 8MP stills, which isn’t impressive on paper, since most smartphones will beat those numbers – so what is its USP? The Session will fit into places where bigger GoPros won’t (and where you wouldn’t dare risk putting your phone), and it’s perfect for little children, since it’s so simple to operate.
