Art on wheels: Mumbai taxis get swanky
Art on wheels: Mumbai taxis get swanky

City graphic designers find the best canvas to showcase their talent – Mumbai’s beloved kaali-peeli.

No one said your daily ride to work has to be drab. And nothing dispels that early morning gloom better than some artsy funk. And a design firm has taken it upon them to give Mumbai’s regular taxis a wonderful makeover. Taxi Fabric, run by a bunch of young design entrepreneurs based out of London and Mumbai are funding 30 young designers to tell their stories on taxi interiors.

Now, having jazzy interiors is not a new thing for our city cabs. But it is often a matter of choice on the part of the cab owners as it entails added expenses. Taxi Fabric brought in a whopping 11,000 British pounds on Kickstart for this project and they are planning to finish off with 30 fabrics by Christmas this year. The second cycle of the project starts in January 2016. The artwork, done mostly in pop and neon colours are as aamchi Mumbai as it can get – freedom fighters, dabbawallahs, snacking at Juhu beach and the city’s gardens and other landmarks. Beautifully conceptualised, this project adds that extra dash of colour to our streets. Loving it.
