Bakshy - Byomkesh Bakshy
Bakshy – Byomkesh Bakshy

A Dibakar Banerjee film always comes with a lot of expectations, but does the Detective Byomkesh Bakshy teaser live up to them?

Byomkesh Bakshy is one of the first private detectives, or ‘truth seekers’, in Indian literature. Created by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay, Bakshy lived and solved mysteries in the 1940s and ‘50s, at a time when sleuths could not depend on scientific systems or technology. Hence, psychology and deduction are his tools of the trade, in the vein of Sherlock Holmes.

Film makers have been besotted with the character for a long time now. From Basu Chatterjee’s acclaimed TV series to Anjan Dutt and Rituparno Ghosh’s adaptations, various interpretations have been screened. Dibakar Banerjee joins that group, with Detective Byomkesh Bakshy being played by Sushant Singh Rajput.

The teaser gives us glimpses of a war-ridden Calcutta of 1943, and follows the first case of young Bakshy, as he pits himself against an evil genius who is out to destroy the world. Murder, political intrigue and seduction – DBB seems to have all the makings of a delicious thriller. However, while the cinematography and plot look very promising, the Bond-like introduction and a rather jarring heavy metal score (in the teaser, at any rate) are major thumb downs. We look forward to the first proper trailer of the film – you can catch the teaser here.
