Mumbai beats Ramsay and Blumenthal
Mumbai beats Ramsay and Blumenthal

The irani café-themed, Dishoom, claims top spot in Yelp’s 100 Places to Eat in the UK list

Beating world renowned chefs is no mean feat, especially if it’s Heston Blumenthal and his three Michelin star-restaurant, The Fat Duck. But the Bombay-themed Dishoom, in London’s Covent Garden, has been judged the best restaurant in the UK by Yelp. It knocked former winner Regency Cafe to second place and Dinner by Heston Blumenthal to third (gasp).

Owners of Dishoom, Shamil and Kavi Thakrar and Amar and Adarsh Radia are evidently ecstatic. “We couldn’t be more delighted to hear this news. We feel privileged just to be able to serve the guests who come through our doors for breakfast, lunch or dinner, and perhaps share a little bit of our love for Bombay food and culture with them,” Said Shamil Thakrar. Launched in 2010, Dishoom earned rave reviews from critics for its “excellent service”, “reasonable prices” and “wonderful food”. The crowd favourites have been the brunch dish, Kejriwal (two fried eggs on chilli cheese toast), bacon naan roll (a freshly baked naan with chilli tomato jam and fresh herbs) and smoked streaky bacon. The diner pays homage to the Irani cafés that sprung up around Mumbai during the first half of the 20th century.

What differentiates the Yelp list from other restaurant rating lists is its emphasis on places that are most popular with ordinary people using the website. Surprisingly, restaurants run by celebrity chefs didn’t fare well this year. The eponymous Gordon Ramsay, in London, came in 12th, L’Atelier De Joël Robuchon ranked 19th and The Fat Duck in Bray has been placed 37th.
