With the new ban on specific words in films, dialogue writers are scratching their heads

As a country, we take offense to lot of things. Moral policing is our hobby. And now with this new ban on specific cuss words by the Censor Board, the film fraternity comes under the scanner yet again. While mainstream commercial cinema need not be worried too much, indie and small-budget films, which are more risqué and mirror reality to a large extent, are definitely going to have a tough time. And if you take a look at the list, you’ll realise that the words are commonplace and used by most Indians on a daily basis.

Echoing our thoughts, producer Mukesh Bhatt said, “Cinema is an extension of life and you cannot portray real cinema without showing what happens around us. The CBFC has taken some cuss words in isolation and said that they cannot come in any way in even an adult film. You cannot ban a word without seeing it in the context of how it is being used.”  He also explains how to categorize films for the audience, “A few years back, the name and role of the Censor Board was changed from Censor to Central Board of Film Certification, where the CBFC is not supposed to censor anything, they are only required to certify whether the film is eligible for children to see or for adults to see.”

This ban will also put lot of upcoming movies in trouble. Anushka Sharma’s first production venture NH10, will probably be the first one to bear the brunt. As soon as the ban was announced, the production team decided to make a few changes in the film. NH10 is a dark and intense film that includes brutal violence and sequences only for adult consumption. Another film to pay the price will be Anurag Kashyap’s most ambitious project till date, Bombay Velvet, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma. Will the film be titled Mumbai Velvet now?
