In
this season of bans, strike one for Rakhi Sawant, the
fearless item girl. She's been on a dance tour of small
town Maharashtra and the crowds she drew created such
a ruckus that now the police have forced her into returning
back to Mumbai.
Her 'Hungama 2006' tour was kicked off to a sizzling
start in Sangli in mid-May in front of a massive audience,
under the guise of a fund raiser for the police force.Yet
by the time the show reached Kolhapur, a criminal complaint
had been filed against her by the local police who were
scandalized by the earlier show. But she continued undeterred.
In Nanded, the rush to see her was so great that cops
had to lathi charge the crowd. And not surprisingly,
police in Nashik, where she was to perform next banned
her performance in response to a complaint filed by
an hitherto unknown organization called All India Human
Rights Association. "Her performance might provoke
residents and cause trouble," Mangajit Siram, the
Deputy Commissioner of Police for Nashik was quoted
as saying. Rakhi's response, "I can perform and
entertain in a sari." The cops would have nothing
of it, and she was forced into postponing the tour.
"There are so many rapes and crimes happening all
around and yet these human rights people are targeting
a girl trying to earn a decent living," she said
justifiably, indignant" the audience wants to see
me perform but they are not being given a chance to
speak."
