Circuit
(noun, proper): The loveable sidekick of Murli Prasad
aka Munnabhai, who might one of these days be more popular
than his Don Quixote.
In
his big solo release, Anthony Kaun Hai, Arshad Warsi
needed Sanjay Dutt on the film posters to get the audience
inside the theatres. Even though the film had Sanju
baba in a supporting role, the audience was conned into
believing that Dutt was playing the lead. Cut next to
this month's deliciously uplifting Lage Raho Munnabhai,
the second instalment in Rajkumar Hirani's Munnabhai
series, and this time, it's Warsi who emerges as the
real hero. Sure, the Munnabhai franchise won't be the
same without Dutt, but the fact is that Dutt won't be
an effective Munnabhai without Circuit or Sarkeshwar
as he's, oh so properly, called in the film. In fact
post-Lage Raho Munnabhai, it's unfair to term Circuit
as Munna's sidekick. He's quite easily the star of the
enterprise. Hirani bestows him with great punches, witty
one-liners and hilarious comic moments. And Warsi delivers,
with immaculate timing, dignity and smart wit. Nowhere
does he resort to buffoonery and that's why Circuit
is so unforgettable. With Golmaal doing average business
and Anthony Kaun Hai earning him critical praise, Warsi
is going from strength to strength. Coming up next is
Yash Raj Films' festival bet Kabul Express. Warsi plays
a war journalist and has John Abraham for company. Well,
with the kind of form Warsi is in, John better brush
up his acting skills.
