Deus
Ex 2-Invisible War: The legendary 3D FPS
title Deus Ex went on to achieve cult status and now
the much-awaited sequel-Deus Ex 2-Invisible War is out.
The sequel takes place two decades later (2072 to be
exact). Civilisation as we know it has come to a grinding
halt in "The Great Collapse" as nations have
devolved into fragile city-states. So begins a convoluted
saga incorporating deceit, treachery and power-mongering
among powerful factions like the WTO, to ideological
groups like the creepy Cyborg Omars, secretive Templars
and the spiritually-oriented, The Order. You are Alex
D, a cybernetically enhanced, soon-to-be secret agent
whose intensive training programme at the Tarsus Academy
in Chicago is interrupted by a terrorist attack that
destroys the city. After a narrow escape, you reach
the Seattle branch of Tarsus intending to finish your
training. In this catastrophic world, two great factions
are struggling to gain predominance-Tarsus and The Order.
This bleak scenario will put you in a quandary: Do you
serve the corrupt forces hell-bent on global hegemony,
or do you join the rebellion and destabilise an already
fragile world? You are given free rein to explore and
interact with the environment while being courted by
various factions. At no point in the game are you coerced
to make a decision. Early on, you can perform tasks
for opposing groups without any problem, but as the
plot thickens, the WTO might want you to locate and
question an individual, while The Order would like to
see the same person killed. At any time in the mission
until the inevitable deciding choice, the player can
change his mind as often as he wants. Invisible War's
graphics are magnificent -rich textures and dynamic
lighting effects abound. The environments are mostly
urban with lots of architectural details. But all this
comes at a price. You cannot ratchet the visuals beyond
the medium setting, or it turns into a slide show. I
suspect that's because the game is directly ported from
the Xbox console. Also the minimum graphic hardware
to run this baby is a Radeon 8500. Game AI is top-notch
and pretty much stable overall. At Rs 999 from Milestone
Interactive Deus Ex 2: Invisible War is a title worth
having, provided you have the necessary hardware.
