Personal Questionnaire: Glenn Mcgrath

The cricketer opens up about his achievements, regrets, fears and more

What is keeping you busy these days?

While I have retired from cricket, I have some commitments with sponsors that I am working on. The McGrath Foundation also keeps me busy. Commentating, coaching, my family and a little wine on the way… never a dull moment

What is your biggest achievement?

I think of myself as a lucky person because I got to play cricket, which is something I was always passionate about. I am grateful that I could represent my country for so many years. My children make me happy. The McGrath Foundation is also something I’m quite proud of.

Do you have any regrets?

Mark Twain once said that, 20 years from now, you will have more regrets from the things you didn’t do than from the things you did. That’s how I like to live my life. I don’t have any regrets. If there is something I want to try out, I get out there and give it a go and enjoy it.

Which one resolution do you break most often?

I always decide not to procrastinate. But I always end up procrastinating.

Which skill should every man possess?

I am Australian, so it is essential for every bloke to be able to do a good barbeque. And if the guy can cook other things too, that’s great.

Which one thing do you always desire?

Just to be happy, I guess. That’s the secret to life.

Describe a life changing experience

There are a few. When my late wife was going through cancer and passed away of it, it sort of put life in perspective. You realise what’s important in life and all those little things you used to worry about are not important at all. What’s important are the people in your life, people close to you, your family and your friends. I’m lucky to have been through some tough times and I’ve been able to pick myself up and continue.

What is your favourite place on earth?

Africa is an incredible place. I love to get away from the city, spend the night under the stars around a campfire.

What irritates you most about people?

I don’t try to force my opinions or ideals down people’s throats. I think sometimes people are a little ignorant and self-righteous, and they try to tell other people how they should live their lives.

Is there a word or a phrase you overuse?

Some people say I use the word “Dodgy” too much. “Dodgy this”, “dodgy that”.

If you could be someone else for a day, who would you be?

Maybe a movie star like Brad Pitt. Or even to be my wife for a day would be interesting. I’ll get to see things from the other side of the fence.

What are your fears?

I just want to spend more time with my family and children and hope everyone is happy and healthy.

Is there an overrated virtue?

They say patience is overrated, but I believe everyone should have more patience these days.

Can you share some of your favourite memories?

There are too many to count, especially when I was playing cricket for my country. I was there for the birth of both my children, which is pretty special. Certain places I have travelled to in my life have special memories. Sometimes I get to get away from the city, and that is always special to me.

A word of advice

Be happy with who you are, know yourself well, like who you are and enjoy life.
