A Mumbai icon gets a makeover

Akbarallys, India’s first departmental store, has been transformed into an exciting fashion haven.

You cannot be a Mumbaikar and not know Akbarallys. Founded in 1897 by Fakhruddin T. Khorakiwala, this go-to departmental store in the bustling Fort area of south Mumbai boasts of a rich heritage and impressive retail philosophy. In today’s business environment which requires constant dynamism, the iconic store has been recently revamped by Aiman Khorakiwala and is now Akbarallys Men – extensive collections of premium international and Indian menswear brands under one roof. Now if that is not an answer to your shopping woes, we don’t know what is.

Driven by her business acumen and love for fashion, Khorakiwala took the brave decision of transforming the brand drastically. “Akbarallys has been an extremely trusted and renowned brand. We have a loyal clientele and I aspire to continue this tradition. While women have numerous shopping options and don’t mind travelling from store to store to satisfy their shopping needs, I noticed the lack of a multi-brand store for men in the city,” She says.

Along with a wide range of products comprising of ethnic wear, western casuals and formals from reputed brands such as Calvin Klein, Ed Hardy, Gas, Tommy Hilfiger and Louis Philippe, Akbarallys Men also has its own range of bespoke clothing made from the finest Italian fabrics. An impressive journey from heritage to contemporary, Akbarallys is a fine example of keeping up with changing times.
