Ronit Roy is a renowned film and television personality, best known for his roles in hits such as Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Adaalat and many more. Ronit Roy has won numerous awards which include a Filmfare for Udaan and the Star Screen Award for the film, Guddu Rangeela. He also owns Ace Security and Protection services, which has lent its services to films such as Lagaan, Dil Chahta Hai, Saathiya and others.

Here, he talks about his favourite formal and casual looks and how style reflects in the way you live.

 

• I literally live in suits. That’s the fun of working in television: you get to wear good suits almost every day. I change the cut and fabrics of my suits, depending on the season.

 

 

• I believe men should own a few three-piece suits, which are great for formal functions and sometimes for the winter months. Also invest in a few linen suits for the summer months.

 

 

• I like my suits to be a bit conservative and Giorgio Armani suits are classy, trendy, yet conservative. The only branded suits I ever pick up off the rack are Armani and Hugo Boss.

 

 

• For formal Indian wear, do invest in a sherwani. I was first introduced to them by a designer when I hosted a show in Hyderabad. It was a khaki green Hyderabadi sherwani. Among my favourites is a Lucknowi chikan sherwani from the store Millionaire.

 

 

• Men can, and should, wear colour, but the colours shouldn’t be too garish. Even for prints, I opt for smaller ones.

 

 

• Ravi Bajaj makes some great men’s shirts. As for international designers, I would opt for a Roberto Cavalli, Armani or GAP.

 

 

• My favourite casual look is a white kurta teamed with coloured pyjamas, say orange linen pyjamas.

 

 

• My wardrobe must-haves include light and dark grey suits, an off-white linen suit, belts, jeans, T-shirts and shirts. My tees are from all over the world and I generally like to buy them off the streets or in low-cost stores.

 

 

• Always opt for the classic, basic blue denims. I like the straight, loose fit of DKNY jeans.

 

 

• I have more than 150 ties from brands such as Zodiac, Satya Paul, Armani and Trussardi. I also buy exquisite hand-printed ties that are available only at airports. I am most possessive about a grey tie with diagonal stripes from Satya Paul. Then there is a dark blue tie with brown stripes, from Burberry, and a light pink tie with grey paisley prints from Zodiac.

 

 

• My sneakers are generally from Nike. For the more dressy shoes, I opt for handmade Italian brands. A lot of my boots are from Hugo Boss.

 

 

• Watches should be your big investment. Cartier is my favourite brand. I have inherited some watches from my family, like a Movado, which belonged to my uncle. A beautiful black watch with a gold spot, it’s from the Movado museum collection.

 

 

• Style should extend beyond your clothes. It should reflect in the way you live, in your interests. I have been collecting pieces of furniture from all over the world. I think my love for them was a result of my days with the Kapoor family. I worked with Kunal Kapoor, and often spent time at actor Shashi Kapoor’s home. He has a beautiful home with a lot of antique furniture. I always admired the ancient roll top desk he owned.

 

 

• New York is my dream city for shopping. I end up going to Century 2000, this huge mall where you get everything — fragrances, perfumes, ties, suits and denims under one roof.

 

 

• Amitabh Bachchan is my ultimate style icon.

 

 

• If I am not comfortable in something, I won’t wear it, even if it is trendy.
