OnePlus set to launch new smartphone – the OnePlus 2

Rival Xiaomi reportedly has a Mi 5 set for release as well

After months of rumour-mongering and flat out teasing, OnePlus has said it will reveal the OnePlus 2, its new smartphone, on the 27th of this month. It’s not going to be just another hackneyed launch event, either – in a first, the company is going to conduct a virtual reality launch, and has already released a cardboard DIY VR set (based on a similar set by Google) for people to buy and use for the launch. The VR set will go on sale on Amazon.in shortly, according to reports, and users will be able to explore the new phone in detail when the launch happens; in India, it will begin at 8.30am on 28th July.

OnePlus has slowly leaked details of the new phone, and combined with other guesstimations, here’s what the final product is likely to have – a faster processor (a quad-core Snapdragon 810), 4GB of RAM, a Quad HD 5.5-inch screen, a fingerprint scanner (which the company claims is better than Apple’s version), a 3300 mAh battery, a USB Type-C port (the first flagship smartphone to have it), 16GB and 64GB of storage and a 16MP/5MP rear and front camera. Based on hints dropped by the company, the new phone will still be affordably priced, coming in at under $450; in India, don’t be surprised to see a price below that, possibly around the Rs 25,000 mark. The phonewill run on OnePlus’ own Android Lollipop-based OS, Oxygen, and yes, you’ll still have to receive an invite to buy one.

Meanwhile, Chinese smartphone behemoth Xiaomi (whose flagship phones almost mirror the OnePlus in terms of specifications) has been doing some teasing of its own, with rumours flying around that the Mi 5 will launch on the 16th of this month. Unsurprisingly, the Mi 5 has (alleged) specs that are very similar to those on the OnePlus 2 – a Snapdragon 810/820 processor, 4GB of RAM, 16GB/64GB of storage, a Quad HD 5.2-inch screen, a 3030 mAh battery, 16MP/6MP rear/front cameras, a fingerprint scanner and Xiaomi’s own MIUI 7 OS, based on Android Lollipop. Pricing should be in the OnePlus 2’s ballpark too, whenever the phone is actually released in India.
