The numbers are in. Royal Enfield vrooms ahead of Harley Davidson in global sales

Well, the age-old debate can be put to rest – at least for a year, that is. Royal Enfield, the British bike maker owned by the Chennai-based Eicher Motors, sold over 3 lakh bikes in 2014; much more than what Harley Davidson managed to pull off this year – a mere total of 2.67 lakhs.

The major reason behind the rise in Royal Enflield’s sales is its affordability. While Harley’s least expensive bike, the Street 750, costs Rs. 5 lakhs in India, Royal Enfield’s most expensive bike – the Continental GT – costs about Rs. 2 lakhs, which is Rs. 3 lakhs less than the cheapest Harley.

Though both the companies don’t compete with each other globally, it is big news since they are the two leaders in the heavy bike segment in India. And if that wasn’t enough, MD and CEO Siddhartha Lal, wants to build a strong presence in Western Europe and the US while the domestic demand for its bikes remains strong, stated a leading newspaper.
