Maruti Suzuki launches Celerio Diesel at Rs 4.5 lakh

Locally developed diesel engine is the most fuel efficient diesel in the country.

Maruti Suzuki India launched the Celerio diesel on Wednesday at a starting price of Rs 4.5 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) The car packs a 793 cc, two-cylinder turbo-diesel engine that has been developed locally by Maruti with Rs 900 crore invested in it.

It seems to have paid off in some way because the engine delivers an ARAI claimed fuel efficiency figure of 27.62 kpl, which officially makes it India’s most fuel efficient car. The rest of the figures are comparatively mundane  with an output of 47 bhp and a modest 12 kgm of torque. The engine is an all aluminium unit and happens to be the lightest diesel engine in the country. The whole car weighs 900 kg. Despite rumours claiming the contrary, the car is equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission unit and not the AMT unit found in the automatic petrol variant.

The car is equipped with ABS and EBD and packs several features including steering mounted controls, alloy wheels, electrically adjustable OVRMs, keyless entry etc. Although, in all likelihood most of these features will be found in the top end Celerio ZDi (O) variant which will cost Rs 5.71 lakh (ex-Delhi)
