Monster's ball

That there in the photographs is a Mitsuoka Orochi Evangelion Edition. Yes, it’s an actual car, not the end result of melting together different kinds of chewing gum – and topping that off with a liberal dose of LSD. Mitsuoka is a Japanese company, and its calling card is the manufacture of hand-built cars that look like they’re straight out of a manga comic. Remember, Japan is a country where you can purchase used panties from a vending machine, so the definition of ‘weird’ in that country is fairly fluid.

The Orochi, named after an eight-headed, eight-tailed mosnter, is powered by a Toyota-sourced 3.3-litre V6 engine, sending 230 bhp to the car’s rear wheels. The company doesn’t claim it’s a performance car, instead saying that it’s a ‘fashion supercar’, ‘the car to ride to gain attention from everyone.’ This particular car, the last in the line (production will cease after this one), is advertised as ‘brilliance and luridness in front of your eyes’, which is probably understating things a touch.

All this isn’t even the best part, not by a long shot. The car will be sold via lottery, and you’ll have to go to your local 7-Eleven store to buy a ticket. We can just see it now – ‘Oi, I’ll have a packet of smokes, some of those M&Ms, a Coke and a lottery ticket for that insane Japanese car.’ Only in Japan, we tell you.
