Mahendra Singh Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket on August 15, and we’ve been spending our time wiping tears and trying to relive his best moments in cricket.
Well, we can help you out if you’re looking to fill the same Dhoni void in your life by scrolling through some golden Dhoni moments captured via stump mics:
During the first India vs Australia ODI in September 2017, the stump mics captured Dhoni’s advice to bowlers Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal, that eventually helped Chahal take out David Warner. “Peeche se daalna (deliver from behind the crease),” said Dhoni.
During the Test match between India and New Zealand in 2014, Ravindra Jadeja was facing Brendon McCullum and BJ Watling. Jadeja constantly kept going for runs, and Dhoni got a little pissed off at him for not bowling on the off-stump.
“Pujara ko usi ke liye rakha hai. Woh udhar taali bajane nahi rakha hai“ (Pujara is positioned there for a reason, he’s not standing there to clap).
We don’t see a lot of bowling from Virat Kohli, but the Indian skipper is a great bowler when he needs to be. In the match against England in the 2016 T20 World Cup, Kohli managed to take out Kevin Pieterson with a wide yorker. Kohli then seemed to become slightly over-confident and begin to try variations, which ended up as wides and byes, which is when Dhoni told Kohli to just do what he is told and don’t try to be a bowler.
“Jitna bola hai utna kar, bowler mat bann” (Do what you are being told, don’t try to be a bowler), said Dhoni.
In a hilarious moment, Dhoni instructed Sreesanth to move a bit squarer instead of positioning himself where he’s not needed.
“Oye Sree girlfriend nahi hai udhar, idhar aaja thoda” (Sreesanth your girlfriend is not there, please come a little squarer).
On day two of the second Test during India vs Australia Down Under in 2012, Ishant Sharma seemed to struggle with his deliveries. Dhoni sensed it, and told Sharma, “Agar chauka gaya toh mera risk hai, tu bindaas daal. Tujhe agar ek fielder aur chahiye toh main bula lunga. Mujhe koi problem nahi hai.” (It’s on me if the ball gets hit for a boundary, you just bowl. I’ll place another fielder too if you want).
Following the conversation, Sharma went on to take out three crucial wickets that day.
