Legendary Argentine footballer Diego Maradona has died after suffering a cardiac arrest on Wednesday, as reported by Argentine media.

 

Earlier this month, Maradona had successfully undergone surgery for a blood clot on his brain. As per international media reports, the footballer died at his home in Buenos Aires just days after turning 60. Argentina has announced three-day national mourning in the country.

“We are in mourning,” said club spokesman Nicola Lombardo. “We feel like a boxer who has been knocked out. We are in shock.”

He played for notable clubs including Barcelona, Napoli and Sevilla. Known as the Golden Boy, he was the first-ever player in history to notch the world record transfer fee twice. He also represented Argentina in 91 international fixtures and played four FIFA World Cups. He led the team to victory in the 1986 World Cup where he also won the Golden Ball.

 

After Maradona retired in 1997, he went into coaching and managed the Argentina national team between 2008-2010. He was in charge of Gimnasia de La Plata at the time of his tragic death.
