PV Sindhu has returned to India after winning a historic gold medal at the BWF World Championships. “I wish I’ll get many more medals for this country. I would like to thank my fans. It is because of their blessings and love that I am here today,” the shuttler said upon arrival, according to The Times of India.

“A great moment for me. I am really very proud to be an Indian,” she added.

On Sunday, Sindhu beat Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara 21-7, 21-7 in the women’s singles final to become the first Indian to win a World Championships gold medal. The next day, she had taken to microblogging site Twitter to express her feelings and state that she had difficulty holding back her tears while the National Anthem was being played.

“I could not hold back my tears when I saw the Indian flag and heard the National Anthem playing. Words can’t express my feelings about yesterday’s win at the World Championship,” she had tweeted.

The 24-year-old is set to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Kiren Rijiju later today.

“We wanted Sindhu to be aggressive right from the start. Sindhu did that and it helped us,” her coach Pullela Gopichand told TOI.
