Before, only journalists, litigants, lawyers and their staff were permitted to enter the Supreme Court of India. Not anymore. You can now step inside the historic halls of the Supreme Court. It will be open to the general public from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM every Saturday except on declared holidays.
“It is an experiment, a very limited exposure to the Supreme Court, a public institution that I thought should be opened up in a limited way,” Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said.
He also said, “Idea to open up SC was entirely mine. I apologise that I did not consult any of my brother judges. But I am sure they have endorsed it.”
The public can now go on guided tours, which can be booked online. Visitors will be given access to various historic landmarks within the premises and will also be shown courtrooms, as part of the tour.
However, there are some strict restrictions in place, like one cannot carry eatables or chew gutka or carry cell phones while entering the premises. Taking photographs is strictly forbidden.
The Supreme Court of India has an Anglo-Indian inspired architecture and is shaped to symbolize the scales of justice. The public can finally be able to witness a piece of India’s history and can walk through the mighty corridors of the country’s biggest symbol of democracy.
