Sonali Bendre, who was last seen in the 2015 television series Ajeeb Daastaan Hai Yeh, is raring to go and this time, her sights are on the digital space. The actor will be seen in the new Zee5 show, Broken News.

In an interview with Man’s World, the actor, who was a prominent name in the ’90s, with movies like Sarfarosh (1999), Major Saab (1998), and Hum Saath Saath Hai (1999) to her credit, tells us her priority is to play strong characters: “I want great characters, I want strong characters, I want characters who are telling stories, a character that has hopes and stands for something that I resonate with, and that’s what I am looking for as an actor. I need meatier roles and that doesn’t have to be the lead. That has never been my priority, even when I started my journey,” she says.

While talking about her digital debut, Sonali tells us, “This is a new chapter in my life and I am looking at it with excitement. I want to do something new and different. I feel like a newcomer once again and that’s a wonderful feeling. I’m looking for creative satisfaction.”

When asked if OTT platforms are a game-changer for women, Sonali agrees and explains, “OTT platforms have changed the game for female actors because there are so many voices now and there are so many new stories that are told. We need to understand that cinema is a business and one can only make films when there is some return. No one can keep putting in money if we are running into losses. With OTT, this problem has been solved to an extent. It has given cinema independent voices and a chance to portray a stronger female character.”

The Broken News also features Shriya Pilgaonkar and Jaideep Ahlawat in pivotal roles. It is an adaptation of the popular 2018 British series Press and has been directed by Vinay Waikul, who has the Netflix crime thriller Aranyak to his credit.
