Oscars 2021 have finally concluded, with some epic moments for the audience to witness. Many film-makers, actors and artists created history, and bagged the prestigious golden lady for their hard work. Some of these celebrities even gave some really amazing speeches that will go down as the best ones in the history of Oscars 2021 speeches. Daniel Kaluuya will definitely top this list as he gave one of the most hilariously awkward acceptance speeches today (April 25).
Daniel Kaluuya accepted the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his work in Judas and the Black Messiah. He started his acceptance speech by thanking his mother. He said, “I’d like to thank my mom. Thank you so much for pouring into me. You gave me everything. You gave me your factory settings so I can stand at my fullest height.” And then things took a hilarious turn. “There’s so much work to do, guys — and that’s on everyone in this room. This ain’t no single-man job. I look at every single one of you: We’ve got work to do,” Daniel Kaluuya continued.
He further added, “I’m gonna get back to work Tuesday morning because tonight, I’m going up. We’re going up! We’re enjoying ourselves tonight because we’ve got to celebrate. We’ve got to celebrate life, man. We’re breathing! We’re walking! It’s incredible. It’s incredible! My mom met my dad; they had sex — it’s amazing! I’m here! I’m so happy to be alive, so I want to celebrate that tonight.” Daniel Kaluuya’s mom was stunned to hear his speech, while his sister buried her head in her hands.
Youn Yuh-jung was presented the award for Best Supporting Actress for Minari by Brad Pitt, and the actress was pretty nervous about standing next to him. She started her speech by saying, “Wow, Mr. Brad Pitt, finally! Nice to meet you! Where were you when we were filming in person? I’m very honoured to meet you. … I cannot believe I’m here. Let me pull myself together.”
She went on to say, “I don’t believe in competition. How can I win over Glenn Close? I’ve watched her in so many performances. All the nominees, the five nominees, we are the winners for different movies. We played different roles. So we cannot compete with each other. Tonight, I’m here. It’s just I have a little bit of luck, I think — maybe I’m luckier than you. Also maybe it’s American hospitality for the Korean actor. I’m not sure. But anyways, thank you so much. And I’d like to thank my two boys who made me go out and work. This is the result because Mommy worked so hard.”
Mia Neal gave an emotional speech, thanking everyone who has helped in getting Black people acceptance in society. She started by saying, “I was raised by my grandfather, James Holland. He was an original Tuskegee Airman. He represented the U.S. in the first Pan Am Games. He went to Argentina. He met Evita. He graduated from Northwestern University at a time when they did not allow Blacks to stay on campus, so he stayed at the YMCA. After all of his accomplishments, he went back to his hometown in hopes of becoming a teacher, but they did not hire Blacks in the school system. So I want to say thank you to our ancestors who put the work in and were denied but never gave up.”
“I also stand here as Jamika [Wilson] and I break this glass ceiling with so much excitement for the future because I can picture Black trans women standing up here and Asian sisters and our Latina sisters and indigenous women. I know that one day it won’t be unusual or groundbreaking, it will just be normal.” said Neal as she accepted the Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
Other amazing speeches from the Oscars 2021 included that of Travon Free who talked about addressed police brutality towards Black people, Will McCormack’s speech, Tyler Perry’s speech, Florian Zeller’s speech amongst many more.
