Marvel Studios has released an emotional tribute video for Chadwick Boseman, who played the role of T’Challa in the franchise’s 2018 film Black Panther. The actor became a cultural icon for portraying the first Black movie superhero.
He was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2016, passed away at age 43 on August 23. He never publicly spoke about his battle with the illness. Marvel’s tribute video compiles behind-the-scenes footage of Boseman working on Black Panther, as well as interviews with the actor’s co-stars.
Speaking about Boseman’s talent, Lupita Nyong’o, who played the role of undercover spy Nakia said, “What doesn’t Chadwick bring to the character? He’s regal and grounded and brings a gravitas to it. All of this feeds his T’Challa, and I think he wore the crown well.” Angela Bassett, who portrayed the role of Boseman’s mother said, ““I had a great time with Chadwick…I came into it of course with a great deal of respect for his previous work. When I looked at him with proud eyes, they were as mother and also as comrade and colleague.”
