Meghan Markle has been championing women’s rights way before she became a leading actress and the Duchess of Sussex. When only just a child, she battled sexism in television advertisements – Markle was featured on Nickelodeon for writing a letter to Proctor & Gamble over their Ivory dish soap advert.

While an 11-year-old Markle was very vocal about sexism and woman empowerment, she has now taken to supporting women in ways that are equally important, if not so visible. For her wedding, streamed around the globe, Markle wore an haute couture wedding gown designed by Clare Waight Keller and then went with fashion designer Stella McCartney for the evening celebrations.

Fashion United reports that Waight Keller is the first female artistic director of Givenchy and it goes without saying that McCartney is a force to be reckoned with, having forged her own path in the tough business from launching her label in 2011 to becoming the sole owner of it.

For her first appearance as the new Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle chose another woman designer. The mid-length white dress was by Goat Fashion and went wonderfully with her wedding ring and diamond bracelet.

 

In March, the Duchess also wore diamond earrings for the cover of People Magazine which was designed by yet another female designer, Adina Reyter. “As soon as Meghan started dating [Prince] Harry, I said, ‘This is our girl.’ This is the kind of woman we are designing for. Her style is classic and she has amazing taste,” Reyter said, according to The Times of Israel.

“Then to see her actually wearing our earrings was so exciting,” she added.

Markle was also officially added to the royal family’s website on May 21 where she proudly proclaimed that she was a feminist. “I am proud to be a woman and a feminist,” she stated in the bio, much to the delight of anybody who rightly believes in the political, economic, social and personal equality of the sexes.

The thing is, it’s not just enough to support a cause verbally and ideologically. If we want to see more women getting their due respect in industries and businesses, we also need to offer our financial support. We need to frequent more women-run businesses and if nothing, at least publicise them and spread the word. Meghan Markle is well aware of that and her choices aren’t just random coincidences. By choosing to lend her platform to creative, talented and skilled women, she’s helping the feminist cause and honestly, we are so here for it.
