You don’t realise how much you hate dry days unless it’s a dry day. And in case you haven’t stocked up enough, you’re in for a really desiccated one today. But to have you covered on all such future occasions, we have a relatively quick fix.

Beer and wine are the most time-consuming beverages to brew and alongside work, it’s nearly impossible to keep a check on the hygiene and temperature conditions every day. So we came across this reasonably easy exercise to homebrew a delicious Apple Cider, which could help you get through all these unwelcome days of dryness.

Step 1 – Collecting ingredients

The best part about this recipe is that you don’t have to buy fancy ingredients. It is made from some fresh pressed apple cider, which you can order online easily. The slightly expensive part is the brewing yeast that is also available online. Besides, you need some brown sugar and assorted spices, like cinnamon and ginger, according to your preference.

In terms of equipment, you will need some clean glass bottles (unlike other alcohol brewing recipes), rubber corks, plastic airlocks and rubber stoppers with holes, all of which are again easily procurable from the web. Other must-haves include a funnel, measuring cups and labels for different bottles.

Step 2 – Readying the equipment

You will have to be on your toes once the mixing begins, so it’s better to prepare the essentials in advance. Mix the yeast with some warm water in a 250ml dish as per the instructions on the packet. Ensure that the bottles are clean on the inside and avoid touching the rim or the inside of the bottle.

Step 3 – Get mixing

Now that we have everything ready within arm’s reach, make different combinations of spices as per your taste. Pour the juice into the bottles and label them according to the spice mixture that has been dispensed into each one. Use a tablespoon to add the yeast-water mixture (one-fifth per bottle) through the funnel. Add 250mg of sugar per litre of juice.

Step 4 – Work those bottles

Once all the ingredients are put together, cap the bottles, turn them upside down and give them a good shake for probably a minute or so. You want to ensure that everything is dissolved into the liquid.

Step 5 – Store and drink

After everything has become one, replace the caps with airlocks and the rubber caps with holes. Press the stem down the throat of the bottle and fill some amount of water into it. Airlocks usually have indications so that should help avoid the water spilling out once the yeast ferments and should be enough to prevent bugs from attacking your alcohol-in-the-making.

Store the bottles in ambient temperature of 15-20 degrees Celcius. In hot conditions, you can wrap damp towels and replace them as and when required. People usually pile up these bottles in their cupboards.

Taste the brew a week later and let it ferment for another week if it does not feel right. Once you’ve arrived at the desired taste, store the bottles in the fridge for a couple of days to ‘crash’ the yeast. Pour the contents of the bottles into other containers and carefully leave the sediment behind. And voila! You have your homebrewed apple cider!
