Twitter was enraged when actor Siddharth wrote a controversial tweet that was directed at badminton champion Saina Nehwal.  It all started on January 5 when Nehwal tweeted her concern over the incident in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s convoy was stopped. The PM’s car was halted by protesting farmers for 15-20 minutes on a flyover in Punjab’s Bathinda.

She took to Twitter to voice her opinion, saying, “No nation can claim itself to be safe if the security of its own PM gets compromised. I condemn, in the strongest words possible, the cowardly attack on PM Modi by anarchists”.

Retweeting her post, Siddharth wrote something that did not sit well with people. “Subtle cock champion of the world…Thank God we have protectors of India. Shame on you #Rihanna,” he said.

Soon after, The National Commission for Women issued a statement saying that the comment by the actor is “misogynist and outrageous to the modesty of a woman amounting to disrespect and insult to the dignity of women on social media platforms.” NCW chief, Rekha Sharma wrote to the resident grievance officer of Twitter India, asking them to block the actor’s account.

Saina Nehwal’s father, Harvir Singh Nehwal told ANI, “Whatever he said is not right. I got to know that he is a big actor in the South. He used very wrong words against Saina. It`s very wrong for him to give such derogatory statements.”

Siddharth responded to the backlash saying that he did not mean to disrespect anyone. He added that his “subtle cock” tweet contained no kind of insinuation. “Cock and bull. That’s the reference. Reading otherwise is unfair and leading. Nothing disrespectful was intended, said or insinuated. Period,” he tweeted.
