Dick Pound, a veteran International Olympic Committee member told USA TODAY that the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games are set to be postponed amidst the coronavirus pandemic.

“On the basis of the information, the IOC has, postponement has been decided,” Pound said in a phone interview. “The parameters going forward have not been determined, but the games are not going to start on July 24, that much I know.”

The Canadian Olympic committee member who has been an influential member of the IOC for decades stated that the games will likely be moved to 2021 and that further details will probably be revealed in the coming weeks.

“It will come in stages,” said the 78-year-old IOC member. “We will postpone this and begin to deal with all the ramifications of moving this, which are immense.”
