Brunei Implements Stoning To Death Under New Barbaric Anti-LGBT Law
In what is terrible news, Brunei has enacted a strict Islamic law that makes anal sex and adultery punishable by stoning to death.
The barbaric move has sparked international condemnation with celebrities calling for a boycott on all the restaurants owned by the Sultan of Brunei.
“You wake up and realise that your neighbours, your family or even that nice old lady that sells prawn fritters by the side of the road doesn’t think you’re human, or is okay with stoning,” one Bruneian gay man told the BBC.
According to an AFP report, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah said in a public address that he wants to see Islamic teachings grow stronger in the country.
Homosexuality was already illegal in the small South-East Asian nation and was punishable by up to 10 years in prison. While Brunei has retained the death penalty, reports the BBC, it has not carried out an execution since 1957.
The news agency also reports that rape, sodomy, adultery, robbery and/or insult to the Prophet Muhammad will carry the maximum penalty of death. Lesbian sex carries a different penalty – individuals found guilty will have to face 40 strokes of the cane and/or a maximum of 10 years in jail. In fact, even theft is punished by amputation under the changes to the penal code.
