Martin Scorsese’s name alone makes us sit up. Add Mick Jagger, Terrence Winter (of Boardwalk Empire and The Wolf of Wall Street fame) and Breaking Bad’s George Mastras to the mix, we couldn’t be more excited about the end product. We are talking about the HBO’s upcoming 10-episode drama series called Vinyl. Set in 1970s New York, it follows Richie Finestra (played by Bobby Cannavale), a record executive trying to resurrect his label, American Century. Scorsese is directing the pilot while he and Jagger are co-producing it. The cast also includes Olivia Wilde, Ray Romano and Ato Essandoh.
The trailer has lot of Scorsese’s touches: white powder, voiceovers and liberal amount of violence. HBO calls the project “a ride through the sex- and drug-addled music business at the dawn of punk, disco and hip-hop.”
However you have to hang in there till 2016 for the debut.
HBO sure loves to tease. After Vinyl, we now got a tiny glimpse of its Anthony Hopkins-starrer series, Westworld. The source material is Michael Crichton’s 1973 sci-fi movie of the same title. Jonathan Nolan (Christopher Nolan’s brother and frequent collaborator) co-wrote and directed the pilot. So we can expect lot of artificial intelligence stuff. The teaser doesn’t reveal much of the plot but manages to squeeze in enough futuristic flashes to keep us intrigued. From what we have gathered Hopkins will play Dr Robert Ford, an inventor who runs an adult theme park populated by lifelike robots that recreate periods of history for the amusement of park guests.
The network describes Westworld as ‘a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the future of sin.’ The reboot includes other talented actors like Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden, Thandie Newton and Jeffrey Wright.
Westworld will air sometime in 2016.
