Virat Kohli Is The Only Cricketer In Forbes’ Highest Paid Athletes List For 2018
India skipper Virat Kohli is among the world’s highest-paid athletes, according to a Forbes’ compilation topped by American boxing champion Floyd Mayweather.
Kohli is the only cricketer and one of the only two Asians on the list. He is ranked 83rd with earnings of $24 million, which is roughly equivalent to Rs160 cr.
The 29-year-old isn’t just cricket-crazy India’s biggest sporting personality, but he’s also one of the most popular athletes in the world, boasting more than 25 million Twitter followers.
Lion’s share of Kohli’s pay comes off the pitch, where he’s partnered with the likes of Puma, Pepsi, Audi and Oakley. In March he also became India’s first brand ambassador for Uber.
“This year the Indian national cricket board named Virat as one of just five players to receive the newly created A+ contracts, which guarantee an annual retainer of more than USD1 million, and Indian Premier League club Royal Challengers Bangalore recently increased his salary to more than USD 2.6 million,” mentions Forbes.
As expected from recent trends, this year’s list contained no women athletes. Last year, Serena Williams was the only woman to get featured in the top 100 list, but her prize money dropped from $8 million to $62,000 this year after she gave birth to her daughter, Alexis, in September.
As mentioned previously, the ‘World’s highest-paid athletes 2018’ list is topped by 41-year-old boxer Mayweather Jr., with $285 million earnings. Argentine footballer Lionel Messi is ranked second in the list with $84 million, followed by Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo ($61 million).
