A wise shopaholic once said, when in doubt, go to the mall. We might be making that up, but when it’s about malls like Mumbai’s Palladium, one of the country’s leading luxury destinations, you’re never short of reasons to drop by. It gave us one more reason to go by when it hosted an elegant soirée, in the form of the second edition of Timeless Classic. The event has gained popularity for its celebration of the rare and the classic, via a set of novel experiences initiated by Palladium for its haut monde luxury shoppers. It also gives these shoppers the opportunity to become familiar with different luxury brands on an on-going basis.
Presented with the support of Brooks Brothers and Diageo, the event brought together the crème de la crème of the Maximum City. The duo had the who’s who riveted, as they showcased their specialties through these sessions, tailor made for gentlemen with fine taste. The dapper Kunal Kapoor hosted the signature masterclass on menswear, to kick off proceedings.
Dressed in an elegant Brooks Brothers suit, paired with a pink shirt and a bright bowtie, the Rang De Basanti actor spoke to us ahead of the event. “It’s not every day that you get to represent a brand that has a 200-year old legacy. To put things into perspective, Brooks Brothers was around before Hollywood, or even the Statue of Liberty,” he said. His admiration for the iconic American brand translated on to the stage, as he demonstrated how to rock different looks, carefully curated by Brooks Brothers, with its wide range of formal clothing. “There was once a time when men could get away with a pair of trousers and a jacket for an evening event, but men’s fashion has really evolved now. It’s become an art form,” he said, as he put together the first look for the evening, for business meetings.
With an emphasis on accessorising and paying attention to the perfect fit in the school of cool, he then dissected the perfect looks for a busy weekend –from a grey suit or a classic blue jacket to vibrant colours like yellow and pink – and the red carpet. Agreeing that wearing a tuxedo can be a boring exercise, he shared, before signing off, that adding a complementary bowtie, or something like a cummerbund, can help spice things up and enable you to ace the tux.
With a classy aftertaste from this chic rendezvous, the guests were in for an even more delectable treat, with Diageo’s whisky tasting session, hosted by the trade ambassador of The Singleton, Nicholas Ord. He dived into the intricacies of whisky by familiarizing the audience with the nuances of different malts from the home of scotch whiskies, Scotland. As the sumptuous chocolates from Royce made their way to the tables, almost everybody turned into a whiskey connoisseur.
First to be called upon was the 12 YO Singleton. Coming from the Highlands, the creamy and bright malt is a beautiful balance of lightly cleansing fruit notes and gingery toasted maltiness; a smooth texture, like good chocolate slowly melting on the tongue. It has initially wine-based top notes that rapidly evolve into fresher, sweeter plummy fruits, offset by zesty, oily orange peel. Subsequently, there are aromas of rich caramel toffees and chocolate, accompanied by malt-y biscuits.
It was followed by the Isle of Skye’s only single malt, Talisker. The first glorious citrus sweetness of fresh oranges develops into soft mango on the nose. Maritime air with seaweed, driftwood and salt continue under as the malt embodies everything from its land of origin. The palate is soft and sweet at first, coating the tongue with light smoke. It quickly becomes more pungent and savoury, with a hot spiciness that had the guests spellbound, as the session drew to a close.
It was then over to Citibank to set the mood for a night of merriment, as the invitees let their hair down to foot-tapping music. The president (West) of The Phoenix Mills Limited, Rajendra Kalkar, was in high spirits during the event. “The second edition of Timeless Classics brings an extravaganza in styling, fits and taste that define a gentlemen’s club with our event partners. These extraordinary events drive the essence of Palladium for refining taste through our exclusive luxury offerings,” he said.
Brooks Brothers India business head, Anand Nair, said that his company was glad to be part of Palladium’s Timeless Classic. “We were able to share a part of Brooks Brothers’ legacy with the city’s most extraordinary gentlemen, who value the fine tailoring and contemporary appeal that our brand offers,” he added, as the evening headed into its final hours. Also gracing the occasion were Jatin Kampani, Vikram Raizada, Ira Dubey and Sandhya Shetty.
