What’s your current state of mind?
I am a little sleep deprived and need some coffee as I have been busy doing promotional work for Khamoshiyan. But, like coffee, I feel like I’m brewing. When something is brewing, you don’t know how it’s going to come out. You know the taste, but not really. It’s exciting. I am also excited about Furious 7, which comes out in April.
What is your biggest achievement?
Finding a friend in Mahesh Bhatt. I remember the moment after the screening of Khamoshiyan for Fox Studios when Mukesh and Mahesh Bhatt hugged me. They also gave me a painting.
What is your greatest regret?
There have been a few, and I have learnt from them. Always Kabhi Kabhi [Fazal’s debut film as a lead, which flopped] was the first. We spent a lot of time on the film, and I regret losing that time.
Which one film do you wish you were a part of?
I wish I could have played Milkha Singh in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. I would have got a kick out of being in a biopic.
What are you searching for?
A satisfying meal at the end of the day. For me, that is true happiness, because whatever I do, I will enjoy my meal if I have done a good job. A good meal sums up a job well done.
Who is the most interesting person you’ve met?
Film maker Saeed Mirza. My first film, Ek Tho Chance, was with him. The film was never released, but he has been a mentor to me. I have spent a lot of time discussing cinema and economics with him and I love talking to him. He has been extremely influential in my life.
What should every man know about women?
They like to know that you are listening.
What has been your biggest extravagance?
An obnoxiously expensive Burberry suit. I feel so horribly guilty about buying it. Spending so much money on clothes is unethical.
What is your guilty pleasure?
Anything that can give me an adrenaline rush. And, chocolates. I am craving them right now. I am a fat, fat man inside my head, like Monica [Geller, a character from the TV show Friends].
What one experience do you want to have before you die?
I want to share my kid’s first smoke. But, more importantly, I want to see my grandmother and mother enjoying life in my dream house in Goa. Also, not to sound like a fan boy, but I want to meet Al Pacino.
What is your favourite holiday destination?
What irritates you most about people?
Being two-faced is terrible. Diplomacy is okay, but lying to someone’s face is something I can’t stand. Trust is important to me.
What do you want your epitaph to read?
My tombstone would be a jukebox. You can come and play your favourite music and chill, and the proceeds can go to maintaining my grave.
Which one skill should every man possess?
Proficiency in a martial art or combat sport.
What word or phrase do you tend to overuse?
‘Arrey fuck yeah’. Sounds wrong, right?
Which is your most cherished material possession?
My hard drive and my phone — the unfortunate case of living in this century. But, also, my fountain ink pens. I love writing on paper.
What is your favourite quote?
Find what you love and let it kill you — Charles Bukowski.
