The Asia Cup was scheduled to take place in Sri Lanka during the month of June 2021. The tournament was scheduled to take place in Pakistan in 2020. However, due to the political tension between India and Pakistan, it was improbable that the former would go and play the tournament in Pakistan, and hence, the tournament was shifted to Sri Lanka. Due to the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, the cup was postponed for a year. This year as well, the tournament has been cancelled due to the rise of Covid-19 cases.
Sri Lanka, along with many other countries worldwide, has been hit by the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. The past week has seen cases rise by quite a bit in the country. This led to the cancellation of air travel for a minimum of one week, and is said to be so until the situation improves. In such a scenario, an Asia cup is something that can only be dreamt of. Asia Cup consists of six to eight cricketing nations from around the continent to become the best nation in the sport in their continent. The last edition of the Asia Cup took place in the UAE in 2018, and was a fifty-over tournament. The tournament was won by India on the final ball of the tournament when Kedar Jadhav hit a single to clinch India a trophy, and they beat Bangladesh by three wickets. In the absence of regular captain Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma lifted the trophy and handed it over to the youngsters, who significantly impacted the tournament.
If the tournament were set to go through this year, India would have to send their second-string side as their primary team would be in England playing the World Test Championship final till September. India is set to tour Sri Lanka in a white ball series in July. It is hoped that the situation would be relatively better until then. The other reasons for the cancellation of this year’s tournament are a busy cricketing schedule for many participating countries. Countries would want to play more bilateral series to cover what they missed in most parts of the previous year. The next Asia Cup will now take place in Pakistan, in 2022.
