Mary Kom has been appointed as India’s flag bearer for the upcoming Olympic games in Tokyo starting from July 23,2021. This decision has been taken by the Indian Olympics Association (IOA) on Monday and has to state this decision to the Olympics committee who will then have to make the necessary decisions and arrangements. Along with Mary Kom, Manpreet Singh, the captain of the Men’s India Hockey team would be the second bearer at the opening ceremony. The rule is that the two flag bearers that each country decides should be of different genders, that is one female and one male. Once Mary Kom found out about this news, she was delighted by it and felt that this was a huge honour that has been handed to her. She was emotionally overwhelmed by this fact because this is going to be her last olympics games. The country’s lone individual Olympic gold-medallist Abhinav Bindra was the flag bearer at the opening ceremony of the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. The Tokyo Games are scheduled to open on July 23 and over 100 Indian athletes would be gunning for podium finishes at the showpiece, which was postponed by a year because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
