Rishabh Pant’s heroics went viral on the internet,  after his heroics helped India take a commanding lead over England on Day 2 of the fourth and final Test match of the ongoing series, in Ahmedabad.

In the process, he also became only the second wicketkeeper, after Adam Gilchrist, to score hundreds in the big three countries of world cricket – Australia, England and India.

And when these two swashbuckling glovemen exchanged words of mutual appreciation on Twitter last night, some fans loved the bromance.

Rishabh Pant has been a known admirer of Gilchrist’s brand of cricket. On multiple occasions, he has confessed his high regard for the former Aussie great, along with former Indian skipper MS Dhoni and southpaw Yuvraj Singh.

“It fills me with pride, sometimes, looking at where my cricketing journey started. One thing I have learnt is that we need to learn from our idols and not just copy them. Create your own identity and keep the focus. I was a huge fan of Adam Gilchrist but since the game constantly evolves, I started following MS Dhoni as well. He brought innovations to the game… Later on, in my career, I was helped a lot by Yuvraj Singh,” Pant had said on an Instagram Live session last year.

Gilchrist is considered as a pioneering wicketkeeper-batsman who helped evolve the role of a gloveman in the game of cricket. The three-time World Cup winner batted down the order in Test cricket and his aggressive exploits enabled his skipper (mostly Ricky Ponting) to play with the extra bowler whenever the conditions demanded.

The New South Wales man amassed 17 Test hundreds in 96 matches at a strike rate of nearly 82, most of them coming from number seven. In fact, he once even held the record for the fastest double hundred in Test history, as well.

Gilly’s appreciation of Pant has been well-documented, too. After youngster’s recent efforts in Australia, the Aussie called him a true box-office cricketer in his Mid-Day column.

“There is the flashy left-handed wicketkeeper-batsman—I have a weakness for that kind of player! What an irresistible player Rishabh Pant is. A true box office cricketer, who compels you to watch when he is at the crease. He played with audacity and assurance to keep the scoreboard ticking and ensured that an Indian win was always a possible result.”

Gilly also had words of encouragement for Pant when the latter was going through a hard time with his wicketkeeping a few months back. “My advice would be to learn everything you possibly can, work as hard as you can but don’t try to be MS Dhoni. Just try to be the best Rishabh Pant,” he had said.

The duo then had a lovely exchange earlier in the ongoing series, when Pant finally earned praise for his glove work. On a turning pitch in Chennai, his agility behind the stumps enabled the Indian spinners to wrap up a resounding 317-run win.

Even Virat Kohli was quick to acknowledge the improvement.

“He’s shed a lot of weight and he’s become quicker on his feet, and it’s showing. The way he kept on this pitch with so much turn and bounce was a credit to him for working so hard…. we want him to keep improving as a keeper, get stronger and stronger with his skillsets because we understand how much value he brings to the team,” the Indian skipper had said post the second Test match.

With praise from legends and support from his peers, Pant is quickly emerging as one of Team India’s hottest prospects for the future. If he keeps putting in the same kind of efforts and stays true to his style of cricket, there’s no reason why he can’t fulfil his destiny.

As for his bromance with Gilly, we’ve certainly not seen the end of it.
