Ligue 1 finally has a new champion after a few years as Lille stops PSG’s dominance in the league. It was their first title since 2011 when they had the young and explosive Eden Hazard in their side. This is an excellent achievement for the manager, players, the club, and its fans. They didn’t look like a title-winning side at the start of the season but were giving glimpses as to how and why they shouldn’t be underestimated at all.
There are a few players and reasons as to why they were successful throughout the season. The board’s belief in the manager has been incredible over the past couple of years, and they knew he was building a title-winning team and backed him financially, and at times when he needed the support. He and his team showed the potential that they have in them to go all the way. Their team now is a good mixture of Youth and Experience, which is much needed to guide them and lead them to victory. Mike Maignan has had an outstanding season in goal, while the center-back pairing of Jose Fonte (37 years old) and Sven Botman (21) has been the best in the country. In midfield, captain Benjamin Andre (30) has led by example, guiding tremendous talents such as Boubakary Soumare (22) and former Bayern player Renato Sanches (23). Upfront, Burak Yilmaz was in sensational form during the final stretch of the campaign, scoring six goals in the past five matches. He has been in the form of his life and was the reason for all the goals for the team.
Another primary reason for their title win is their stepping up their A-game in the title-deciding clashes. They didn’t lose a single game when they came up against quality opposition like PSG, Monaco, and Lyon. This is one reason why they are champions and can defend their crown next year as well. They need to improve now on their squad depth and don’t let their young stars go to other teams. If they manage to do so, they can give competition to PSG once again for the title.
