Lady Gaga on the red carpet is a photographer’s dream. The iconoclast has made headlines for her sartorial tastes ever since she made her debut. Fashion, for Gaga, has almost been a religious experience – it’s not about just donning a gown but about venerating it and giving meaning through every cut and crease.

While the songstress may have toned down her style (remember the meat dress?), she is still the object of intense media scrutiny every time she steps outside. For the 91st Academy Awards, the Best Actress nominee chose to go with an Alexander McQueen dress and platinum blonde hair but what really captured the limelight was the famous “Tiffany Diamond” around her neck.

This is only the third time that the 128.54-carat Tiffany & Co. yellow diamond has been worn – Audrey Hepburn donned it in promotional images for Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Mrs Sheldon Whitehouse wore it to the 1957 Tiffany Ball in Newport, Rhode Island, W Magazine reports.

The diamond was mined in 1877 in South Africa and Charles Lewis Tiffany bought it for $18,000 in 1878, reports The Week. While the diamond was put on sale in 1972 for a whopping five million dollars, it found no takers then. It will cost around 30 million dollars were it to go on sale today.
