From 230kg to 65kg, Adnan Sami's Weight Loss Journey Shows His Resolve

Earlier today, musician Adnan Sami dropped a holiday photo from the Maldives - showing off one of his best looks yet. Here's a lowdown on how the singer went from over 220 kgs to the best shape of his life:

Early Career: Sami had been severely overweight right at the time when he burst onto the playback scene in the early 2000s after making a reputation as a talented young pianist in the UK. While Adnan was healthy in his 20s, by the time he reached his mid 30s - when his Bollywood career took off - he weighed over 220 kgs.

Turning Point It was during 2005-06 that Sami made some of his best songs, such as Kiss Me Baby and Meter Down - yet the year was a disaster for his health.  Forced to undergo a surgery to treat lymphedema, Sami found himself stuck in bedrest for three months, barely able to breathe due to his weight. At the time, doctors warned him that he had around half a year left to live.

Dieting Period Resolving to fix his health after 2005, Sami suddenly disappeared from the public sphere, and dedicated himself to getting in shape. After one last steak dinner, paired with a large cheesecake, Sami finally began his journey. While he was too out of shape to work out effectively, he began by dieting - restricting himself to salads, boiled dal, chicken, and fish. Instead of sugar, he resorted to zero-calories sweets instead.

Speaking on Body Shaming Long after his fitness journey, Sami would also go on to talk about the psychological impact of shame on his earlier condition. "If you are obese, it doesn't mean that you don't have a heart. It's just that on screen not many had attempted it with the kind of size that I had. I was very unapologetic about my size, because I felt that I had as much right to love someone as anybody else."

A 16-month Transformation Once Sami managed to shed 40 kgs through his diets, he was allowed by doctors to work out, dramatically boosting his progress. Celebrity fitness guru Prashant Sawant designed a 6-day per week routine that got Sami through an hour of strength and cardio training. Dropping a whopping 10 kgs per month, through sheer hard work and perseverance, Sami managed to reach his fitness goals, dropping around 150 kgs in just under 1.5 years.

Post-Transformation Apart from saving his life, Sami's fitness journey inspired thousands and continues to do so today. He's a big believer in using one's mind to conquer health issues - attributing 80% of his journey to psychological effort. "If I can do it, anybody can. Because, I never thought I can do it. I am a living, breathing example of mind over matter," he says.
