5 Cricketers Who Battled Drug & Alcohol Addiction

Wasim Akram recently opened up about his battles with cocaine addiction after quitting cricket. Akram first tried the drug at a party in England, and his dependency on cocaine increased post retirement. While his visits to rehabs were unsuccessful, but he eventually quit after the death of his first wife.

Andrew SymondsAndrew Symonds struggled with alcohol addiction for the majority of his career. He once turned up drunk at a team meeting, and was sent back from the tour by Cricket Australia as a punitive measure.

Imran KhanImran Khan was a party freak, and in his heydays, he was a cocaine addict. His ex-wife Reham Khan once wrote that he used to consume six grams of cocaine at one point. His ex-colleague Sarfaraz Nawaz once revealed that Khan was fond of both cannabis and cocaine.

Shane WarneShane Warne missed the 2003 World Cup after testing positive for diuretic - a substance often used to mask steroid usage. Warne lived a zesty life, and his career was full of controversies related to alcohol consumption, drugs overdose and infidelities.

Brendan TaylorBrendan Taylor was suspended by the ICC for accepting bribes for spot-fixing. Taylor, however, was secretly caught sniffing cocaine at a party in Mumbai and was blackmailed to do spot-fixing. He underwent extensive rehabilitation to get clean.

Ricky PontingAt the beginning of his career, Ricky Ponting too struggled with alcohol. He was once kicked out of the ODI team for getting into a scuffle at a pub. Ponting, however, overcame his alcoholism and had an illustrious career ever since.
