After a long career as a theater actor in the 2000s, Benedict Cumberbatch has somehow broken into mainstream appeal in a big way - first dazzling audiences as Sherlock, and then picking up the title of Sorceror Supreme. While the title isn't in his hands anymore, there's a whole lot of paychecks making their way to the 45-year old actor.

Snagging the role in 2014 was a massive win for Cumberbatch, who beat out stars like Joaquin Phoenix, Jared Leto, Ethan Hawke, and more during the casting process. Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson was said to be so convinced that Cumberbatch was the right man for the role, that he convinced Marvel to push production of the film by almost a year to accommodate the actor's schedule. For his efforts, the actor snagged a respectable $3.5 million.

After making a major impression in Doctor Strange, Cumberbatch's character went on to appear in three major films from Phase 3 - Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. While we never got to see the full 'salary' breakdown for these films, a 2018 report from The Mirror tells us that Cumberbatch earned a whopping $2.5 million - a serious payday considering his relatively lower screentime in these movies.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is easily one of the most successful MCU films so far - and heavily relied on Stephen Strange's spellwork to make the madcap multiversal plot take shape. While Cumberbatch's actual earnings remain under wraps, several sources estimate that the actor took home around $1 million for a relatively modest amount of time spent onscreen.
