Kargil Vijay Diwas 2022: 4 Iconic Armymen Who Became Martyrs of the War

Marking the success of 'Operation Vijay' back in 1999, Kargil Vijay Divas honours the memory of all 527 Indian soldiers who fought and died for the country. Here's a few standout armymen from the conflict who showcased exceptional bravery, but who aren't among us anymore.

Captain Vikram Batra, Param Vir Chakra 13 JAK Rifles

Infamous for assault missions on key enemy positions, Captain Batra lost his life on July 7th, 1999. He passed after leading a charge on enemy soldiers, and succumed to his injuries after tending to a wounded comrade.

Hometown: Palampur, Himachal Pradesh

Lieutenant Manoj Kumar Pandey, Param Vir Chakra 11 Gorkha Rifles

Under intense enemy fire, the brave and grievously injured Lieutenant sacrificed his life to help capture Jaubar Top and Khalubar hill in the Batalik sector — but not before downing several enemies in close quarters combat.

Hometown: Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh

Major Vivek Gupta, Maha Vir Chakra 2 Rajputana Rifles

Quickly leaping to action after some of his comrades were downed, Major Gupta managed to save his squad using a rocket and close-quarters assault. Inspired, his battalion went on to  secure Tololing Top, despite the officer succumbing to his injuries.
