Football, which started as a working man’s game, has turned into a multi-billion dollar industry. Last year alone, the English Premier League spent nearly £2.8 billion on transfers, a whopping 93 per cent increase compared to the previous season. That said, here are the top 11 most expensive players in their positions.

GK - Kepa Arrizabalaga (£71.5m) Chelsea broke the Premier League record for the transfer of a goalkeeper when signing Kepa from Athletic Bilbao in the summer of 2018. After earning a Champions League medal, the goalkeeper is now rumoured to be on Bayern’s list for a much lower price than what the Blues paid.

CB - Virgil van Dijk (£75m) Liverpool may have broken the transfer record fee for a defender at the time with van Dijk’s signing back in 2018. However, the Merseyside Reds did end up winning the Premier League and the Champions League in the following years.

CB - Harry Maguire (£78m) The player rumoured to be heading to West Ham, Maguire currently stands as the most expensive Premier League defender of all time after his move to Manchester United from Leicester City.

LB - Joao Cancelo (£61m) City has never shied away from making smart albeit expensive signings, except for the case of Cancelo, who made the move to Manchester from Juventus in 2019 and has been fairly unimpressive since then.

RB - Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£50m) After becoming the sixth-most expensive defender of all time with his move to Manchester United, Wan-Bissaka has been impressive with his defensive duties but still lacks a lot in attack. A trend that seems to be changing under Eric Ten Hag.

CDM - Declan Rice (£105m) Arsenal broke the British transfer record to sign possibly the future England captain, Declan Rice. The midfielder played a huge role in West Ham’s recent European success.

CM - Enzo Fernandez (£106.8m) The now-World Cup winner will likely remain the most expensive Premier League player of all time after his move to Chelsea in January.

CM - Moises Caicedo (£110m) As things stand, Moises Caicedo will soon become the most expensive player in the premier league, after a British record fee of £110m was agreed with the Brighton midfielder.

FW - Jack Grealish (£100m) Before Declan Rice, the Man City winger held the title for being the most expensive British player of all time after his move from Aston Villa in 2021. Since then, the English international has gone on to win a treble under Pep.

FW - Mykhailo Mudryk (£89m) After toying with Arsenal for quite a while, the Ukrainian international finally made a January move to Todd Bohely’s Chelsea. But despite showing flashes of brilliance, the forward is yet to showcase his full potential.

ST - Romelu Lukaku (£97m) Chelsea had high expectations for Lukaku’s return to the Bridge. But amidst the chaotic management and dressing room drama, the striker was yet again shipped out to Inter Milan on loan last season.
