After 10 years in exile, Konami has announced a bunch of Silent projects, including a Silent Hill 2 remake, a movie and an interactive live-stream series. In the same spirit and with Halloween right around the corner, we’ve compiled a list of some of the most terrifying video games ever made (ranked in no particular order).

Bloodborne There is perhaps nothing scarier than Lovecraftian horror, and no game which captures its aesthetics better than Bloodborne. Set during the night of the Hunt, the city of Yharnam is packed with Eldrich monstrosities which can give anyone nightmares.

Alien: Isolation We have seen Xenomorphs hunt marines and miners in the movies, but what if they were hunting you? Alien: Isolation takes this concept and dials the terror factor to 11, in a gruelingly lengthy gameplay.

Dead Space 2 Speaking of survival horror set in space, Dead Space and Dead Space 2 borrows many elements from the Resident Evil and Alien franchise and makes something unique out of it. Crafted with a disturbing atmosphere and an eerie sound design, the Dead Space series will give you the heebie-jeebies for days.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent You know you’re in trouble when a video game opens with your character waking up in a strange castle with no weapons and a “sanity meter” on the corner. Filled with terrifying creatures and nightmare-inducing jump scares, you may want to keep your lights on for this one.

Outlast If Outlast wasn’t a video game, it’d make for a damn good scary movie. Played in first person POV, the game asks you to investigate an abandoned asylum in the mountains which is strangely active at night. And all you have on you are a pair of night vision glasses.

Resident Evil 7 What is scarier than deformed monsters? Deformed monsters who used to be human. Arguably the best game in the series, Resident Evil 7 actively tries to make you soil your pants (pardon our French), with its terrifying atmosphere and a very creepy soundtrack.

Silent Hill (P.T) Of all the things that could’ve been the one that hurts the most was the cancellation of Kojima’s take on the Silent Hill series. Released as a demo teaser, P.T was utterly terrifying with its premise of being stuck in a never-ending corridor, filled with never-ending terror.
