Worst World Cup Title Defence In Cricket

England has scripted an embarrassing record in their defence of the ODI World Cup title they won four years ago, by losing six out of eight games. Clearly, Jos Buttler and his men would want this nightmare to end soon.

They have won only two of their eight games, the last one against a lowly-ranked Netherlands. Their batters and bowlers went out of form at once. Buttler and Bairstow, two of the senior batters in the side, have been a big disappointment.

No team had capitulated like England in their title defence. They are also the current T20I champions and will be defending the title next year.

In the history of ODI World Cups, the only parallels that can be drawn is to Australia's defence in 1991-92 and Sri Lanka's defence in 1999.

Four years after winning their maiden World Cup in 1987, Australia had failed to live up to their expectations, losing three out of their top matches, including a nine-wicket defeat to South Africa.

Sri Lanka, meanwhile, the 1995-96 defending champions, bowled out of the tournament in 1999 with three heavy defeats.
