Over the years, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, or the ‘G-Wagen’ as it is fondly referred to, has earned the reputation of being owned by celebrities, and a specific set of people who like to make an offer we can’t refuse.

But not many know that its hulking appearance also serves a purpose. The G-Wagen in itself is a very capable off-roader. However, if that was not enough for you, the folks at Mercedes-Benz has come up with an even more “off-roady” version of the 4×4 called, well, the Mercedes-AMG G63 4×4².

Right, so what’s new? To hammer in its off-road capabilities, the SUV now gets several upgrades. This includes a higher ground clearance of 351mm (an increase of 113mm), all thanks to its new suspension setup. Additionally, the attack angle has now been increased to 45 degrees, with water-wading depth now being up to 910mm.

Rounding the whole look up, the G63 4×4² is wrapped up in a shade of green, which is also seen on the AMG GT R. Then there is a special set of 22-inch, along with additional LED lighting on the roof and carbon fibre bits spread across the wheel arches.

Things are kept classy on the inside. It’s a Mercedes after all. The seats come covered in premium Napa leather. Taking pride of place are the twin 12.3-inch displays, one which serves as a digital driver’s aid and the other as a touchscreen infotainment system.

Under the hood, the G-Wagen continues to be powered by the same 4.0-litre bi-turbo AMG V8 motor which makes 585PS and 850Nm of torque. Transmission is handled by a 9-speed automatic, which sends power to all four wheels.

The prices of the Mercedes-AMG G63 4×4² are yet to be announced, but don’t expect it to come cheap. Considering the standard G-Wagen retails for a whopping Rs 1.64 crore (ex-showroom), expect a hefty premium to be slapped on it. Of course, this is valid only if Mercedes plans to bring this beast to India. We have our fingers crossed.
