The 2017 Kering Talk was abuzz with exciting news from Gucci, one of the most famous fashion houses in the world. The Italian brand’s President and CEO Marco Bizzarri announced two major introductions in their organization mandate, the first being joining the Fur Free Alliance where they will stop incorporating animal fur from its Spring Summer 2018 collection and the second, funding a million Euros as a founding partner of UICEF’s Girls’ Empowerment Initiative. Both moves come under their new ten-year “Culture of Purpose” sustainability plan.

For the Fur Free Alliance initiative, the luxury brand focuses on cruelty that fur-bearing animals suffer through and will be organising a charity drive of the existing fur-bearing products of which the proceeds will go to LAV and the Humane Society.

As founding partner of UNICEF’s Girls’ Empowerment Initiative, Gucci donated a million Euros to the cause that will reach over 50,000 girls plus another 1,50,000 more indirectly, and empower them with various things. This, in turn, helps the agenda on gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls, which is a part of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This sustainability plan has come into action with Gucci’s aim to try and be a more responsible business. The new system will have environment, humanity and technical innovation as their foundation. Bizzarri pointed out that he wanted to work with someone who shares the same values regarding these three factors and creative director Alessandro Michele fits the bill.

As this plan unfolds onto the world of fashion and the world in general, we’ll patiently be waiting and watching if other luxury houses will follow suite and help to create a better world.
