SBTG's Mark Ong Talks Sneaker Culture, Collaborations, and Creative Vision

''I am excited to contribute to India's growing sneaker culture and hope to elevate it further,'' says Mark Ong (Creative Director of SBTG)

Mark Ong, the creative genius behind streetwear brand SBTG (Mr. Sabotage), is a formidable presence in both art and sneaker culture. Inspired by punk, skateboarding, 80s Americana, and military aesthetics, his work reflects a unique vision and rebellious spirit. Mark has customized shoes for icons like Travis Scott, Offset, and Virgil Abloh. We caught up with him at Limited edt's store launch in Delhi.

MW: What led you to collaborate with Limited Edt and New Balance for the India launch?

Mark: Our shared passion for innovation, creativity, and pushing boundaries in sneaker culture inspired the collaboration. Following the success of the Singapore Urban Islander collection, we saw an opportunity to share our vision with India's vibrant market. Limited Edt's expertise and New Balance's commitment to quality made them ideal partners.

MW: What makes this collection special?

Mark: The Urban Islander collection blends urban sophistication with tropical flair through a unique combination of elements. It features products from various brands like Ombak, New Era, Helinox, and New Balance, all unified by a playful pineapple print. This design pays homage to Singapore's heritage while adding vibrancy. Additionally, premium materials, innovative designs, and functionality ensure a unique experience for customers.

MW: How does it feel to reach Greater Asia, starting with India?

Mark: As pioneers in our fields, we're honoured to be part of the first Limited Edt store in India, where sneaker culture is in its early stages.

Mandeep: Expanding to Greater Asia, starting with India, is a significant milestone for us, reflecting our commitment to fostering global sneaker culture. We're excited to contribute to India's sneaker scene and hope to elevate it further.

MW: Can you describe the process of creating personalized sneakers and how you feel about seeing them on influential figures?

Mark: Creating personalized sneakers involves understanding our audience's preferences, trends, and cultural influences. We draw inspiration from various sources to develop unique designs that resonate with customers. It starts with the intention to impact the culture, then finding your voice and design language, allowing you to personalize for anyone and push boundaries. Seeing influential figures wear our creations is rewarding, as it motivates us to keep pushing boundaries.

MW: How do you see global sneaker culture evolving, especially in emerging regions like India?

Mark: Witnessing the early stages of a culture like India's is exciting, as it fosters enthusiasm and community building. The global sneaker culture is driven by passionate enthusiasts who value self-expression, creativity, and authenticity, similar to our 20-year friendship.

MW: How do collaborations with celebrities and influencers impact your design approach?

Mark: Having customized shoes for figures like Travis Scott, Offset, and Virgil Abloh inspires me to bring my A-game and constantly elevate my work. Collaborating with individuals at the top of their game pushes me to reach new heights.

MW: What excites you most about the future of sneaker design and collaborations?

Mark: The future of sneaker design is brimming with possibilities thanks to continuous innovation, creativity, and collaboration. I believe the growing popularity of sneaker customization will eventually influence brands to consider incorporating our ideas and designs instead of solely relying on in-house teams.
