Rajesh Pratap Singh

“Bespoke is something which Indian men have always been used to and have been spoilt for choice. The key now is quality, construction of fabric and the garment.”

SS HOMME

Sandeep Gonsalves, co-founder and head designer, SS HOMME talks to MW about how bespoke is an extension of the man himself

How much of a difference does buying a bespoke suit actually make?

A bespoke suit is an extension of the man himself. It adds poise to his stance, without requiring any conscious effort on his part. It bequeaths the old world charm of tailoring, craftsmanship and precision. A specific pattern for the client’s body structure is drafted from scratch with alterations made post the baste trial to ensure a perfect fit. No two individuals share the same body type, so the advantage of bespoke has always been the ability to completely personalise a suit.

Apart from custom fit, how else is a bespoke suit worth the extra money spent on it?

Bespoke is at the pinnacle of personalisation. The pick stitch detailing on the edge of the lapel or functioning sleeve buttons of the jacket are a mark of luxury and bespoke. The worsted wool is handpicked from the finest English, French and Italian mills. The attention to detail involves bemeberg and cupro lining along with horn and corozo buttons.

What is the profile of the average man who is opting for bespoke suits?

The profile ranges from younger grooms, NRIs to professionals who appreciate high quality and fine tailoring.

What are the latest styles customers are opting for when it comes to bespoke suits?

October to December saw a number of men opting for Indian styles of Bandhgalas and bandis with the wedding season in full swing. With summer, we have noticed a trend in men selecting brighter shades such as orange, blue and green for their blazers or full suits.

RAISSON D’ÊTRE

Govinda Mehta, founder, Raisson D’Être talks to MW about the latest styles customers are opting for

How much of a difference does buying a bespoke suit actually make?

Unlike a product available in stores, one can secure a cloth/pattern that best embodies the wearer’s persona, experiences that may have shaped him. The attention to subtle characteristics and their body allows for the “fits like a glove” appeal.

Apart from custom fit, how else is a bespoke suit worth the extra money spent on it?

From a fashion sense point of view, I feel that those that look at the suit as a fashion item opt for the custom fit, and those who regard the suit as an investment opt for bespoke. Since the primary is much more fairly priced than the latter, one has the opportunity to buy into fashionable products and allow for change through rotation, whereas the latter are rotated less frequently.

What is the profile of the average man who is opting for bespoke suits?

In the past it would only be successful bankers, financiers, businessmen, industrialists etc, but now, the buyer is younger, more well-read, well travelled and inclined to differentiate.

What are the latest styles customers are opting for when it comes to bespoke suits?

Trendier, bolder patterns, unique colors, broader lapels, shorter lengths, ticket pockets, cuffs, side adjustment tabs and so forth.
